My First Parkrun 5K Race Of 2016

It's been a busy weekend with me running my first 5K Parkrun race of 2016 on Saturday, I entered for an upcoming 8 mile trail race on Sunday and today I ran my longest distance of the year. Although it wasn't that big a distance, and it was incredibly slow. But never mind about details like that. I'm also on a two day holiday at the minute, so I actually have a bit of time to work on the site.. And relax...

My First Parkrun 5K Race Of 2016

This was the first time I had been to Craigavon Citypark Parkrun since my Improving My Running In 30 Days - Day 30 post, where I had been a volunteer. It was good to get back in the company of other runners, it's been far too long - nearly two months since my last race..

Running In The Dark

This evening's run was a toughie, and not the most pleasant run I have ever had. It was one of those times that I just did not want to leave the house, and even as I was lacing my running shoes my mind was trying to find a way out of running.

"Maybe I could run tomorrow. Maybe I should take another rest day. I think it's too cold. I need to do other things. The house needs tidied. My headphones aren't charged. It's too dark. It's too late. I'm really tired. I will hit rush hour traffic. There's a beer in the fridge...."

But somewhere in the middle of all these excuses was a little voice telling me it's less than nine weeks until the Larne Half Marathon. And I'm unfit. And I need to lose weight. And I need to rack up some miles. And I will regret not going out. And it will be fine when I get out the door and start running.

And so I laced up my shoes, layered up and drove to the secluded, quiet towpath, away from all the rush hour traffic. I was out the door. I was doing this.

Half Marathon Training Begins

On Sunday morning I decided to register for a half marathon with less than 9 weeks before the big day. Instantly I started to regret it, but it's done now and so the training has began. Sort of. I'm taking it pretty easy as I have been quite inactive this past while, and my fitness levels are extremely poor. My weight also continues to hover just under the 200 lbs mark, which is far too heavy for me.

Sunday Evening Run

This was after my realisation that nine weeks would fly by, so it was time to get out and get some training started. I drove to where I usually do my Saturday morning park run races and ran 3.1 miles. I set my pacer on my Garmin and tried to stay ahead of 8 minutes per mile. A few months ago I would have found this very easy, but at the minute it's a bit of a challenge.

I finished the 5K loop in 23 mins 54 sec which was a fastest time on my watch history ( I've only been using it since my Getting Ready To Run Again post). This was an average pace of 7 minutes 38 seconds per mile, which I was quite happy with. My final mile was the fastest too, so it's good to know there is still a bit left in the tank. I'd almost call this a tempo run as it was faster than I have ran in a while, so I'll try and knock a few seconds off for the next time.

And with that, training for my next half marathon has begun.

Larne Half Marathon Entered With Only 9 Weeks Of Training

I have just signed up for my first half marathon of 2016, taking place in Larne, Northern Ireland on the 19 March 2016. Immediately I am worried about a few things.

I am overweight.
I am unfit.
I am very slow.
I have not ran over 4 miles this year.
It is only 9 weeks away.
It is two days after St. Paddy's Day (normally an all day drinking festival for me).

So I think it's fair to say that I won't be running it in under 1 hour 25 minutes, which was my original aim of this website. It is also one of my 35 Running Goals For 2016. However, I have had nothing to set my sights on for a while, so this could be the kick up the backside that I need. This is more about running again, getting fitter and finally completing a 13.1 mile half marathon (something I haven't done since starting this site).
